Serving at Blessed Sacrament
Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church is a community convicted by Jesus’ ministry to the poor, the forgotten, and the marginalized. The Catholic Church clearly and consistently teaches that each person is endowed with dignity and is created in the image and likeness of God. Consequently, our parish participates in a number of social outreach ministries that seek to preach the Gospel through works of mercy and love in the Harrisonburg community:
The Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry serves almost 1500 families a month. Most of the food comes from donations of local stores emptying their shelves. Some of the fresh foods and frozen meats we purchase from the Blue Ridge Food Bank to supplement the food that we give. Our clientele may come once a month Tues-Fri from 9-3pm and leave with a great helping of food for their families. More Information here.
This ecumenical program provides free weekly meals on Thursday mornings at 11:00am in Johnston Hall. The meals are provided by a variety of local area churches scheduled out one year at a time. Four teams of volunteers from Blessed Sacrament do the setup, serving, and cleanup on a monthly basis. We welcome new volunteers for this rewarding ministry. The Christmas meal is a favorite among our regulars.
Wednesday Meal Program (aka Table of Brotherhood)
Members of Blessed Sacrament and other volunteers serve a hot meal to our special guests each Wednesday at 4:30. Volunteer opportunities are available for the following positions: meal provider or coordinator. Meal providers prepare the meal every other month in a specified week. They do not have to be present for the meal, and can drop off food at their convenience. Coordinators and their teams serve once a month. They set up, serve, and clean up. What a wonderful way to serve God’s hungry children in our community!
Is a winter shelter for the Homeless run by a consortium of Harrisonburg/Rockingham churches. It moves weekly from church to church. Our church hosts it at least one week each year, providing overnight shelter, along with breakfast and dinner each day. Many volunteers are needed to provide meals, or to spend the night with our guests.
Faith in Action
Faith in Action is a coalition of congregations and service groups in Harrisonburg/Rockingham County. The model of this program involves a yearly process of listening, researching, proposing solutions, and gathering together with local leaders to ask for solutions. A similar program has been exceedingly successful in Charlottesville. For more information about Faith in Action, check out their website.
Legion of Mary
Blessed Sacrament has two Spanish speaking Legion of Mary groups and is seeking to form an English speaking group as of February 2017. Legionaries carry out many works such as: door to door evangelization, street contact, visits to the sick, and schedule visits of the Pilgrim Virgin. Many Catholics have come back to the Sacraments because of the Legion of Mary.
Matches up members of Blessed Sacrament with JMU students to provide the students with a connection to the Harrisonburg faith community beyond the Catholic Campus ministry. It is like having a Godparent away from home.
Catholic Answers Team
Provides personal and knowledgeable follow-up to individuals having questions pertaining to Catholic teachings. This is an “apologetics” outreach to assist non-Catholics or those fallen away from the faith.
