Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry"Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, that you do unto me." Matthew 25:40
The Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry’s History
The Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry was started in 1980 and was the third customer of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Verona, VA. Initially, we would pick up food from the Food Bank once a month. Now we pick up twice a week to keep the pantry stocked. We are fortunate to be part of the Feeding America Program. This allows us to partner with Walmart, Kroger, and Martins food stores who generously donate their surplus to us. To date, we have been able to give out over 10 million pounds of food.
What started in the basement of our church has now grown into a 7 day a week operation in our permanent home of 2 E. Wolfe Street. The pantry staff has grown from 8 volunteers to 65. Our volunteers average a total of over 1,100 hours a month in support of this parish ministry.
Make a Donation to the Food Pantry
The hunger in our immediate area is staggering. At least 31.8% of families in our community live at or below the poverty level. At least 1 out of 6 Americans go hungry. Our Food Pantry is a critical source of food for these families. It is only through the financial support from our generous parishioners and others that enables us to purchase food. Donations can be made in the weekly offertory or through Online Giving.
